Introducing Alan & Mary Tatton who established Langkawi Boat Sales & Services Sdn Bhd at Rebak Island Marina, Langkawi, Malaysia in 2012.
In 2003 Alan retired after a long career as a professional boat-builder. Our Company, Venturer Catamarans, built 36’, 38’ and 44’ power catamarans and employed a large staff at our production facility in Queensland, Australia. We sold boats throughout Australia and the USA and Mary, as Marketing Manager, was involved on a day by day basis with Sales and Management, traveling many times to the USA to attend major Boat Shows at Annapolis, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Together Al & Mary un-shipped and delivered several boats from Savannah to Miami, Philadelphia to Annapolis and Ft Lauderdale to the Bahamas.
Al, a New Zealander, has been sailing competitively since age eleven years and has competed in most major Offshore Yacht Races out of NZ including the inaugural Tauranga – Port Vila in 1976, Auckland – Tonga and Whangarei – Noumea and many other delivery trips throughout the Pacific. In 1976 he sailed on Rhythm NZ – Sydney and competed in that years disastrous Sydney – Hobart Race, sailing back to NZ early 1977.
In 1980 Al sailed with his family across the Tasman in Aumoana, a 42’ cutter he built in NZ after he sold his company Offshore Marine which was a very successful Volvo-Penta and Glastron powerboat Dealership and Marine Chandlery.
From 1981 Aumoana cruised the Australian East Coast,Noumea – Vanuatu, Santa Cruz, Solomon Is and Louiseades to Cairns before being sold in 1988 when Al again crossed the Tasman and delivered her to New Zealand.
After retiring, Mary and Al lived aboard their 56’ Crowther Catamaran INVESTIGATOR II for nine years. Initially cruising the Australian coast extensively between Sydney and Darwin. They left in mid-2008 to cruise SE Asia including many of the islands of Indonesia, before venturing on to Malaysia and Thailand as far as the Burmese border.
In 2011 Investigator II sailed to Singapore, East Malaysia, Tioman Is, Perhentian Is. and across the South China Sea to Kuching in Borneo. After spending several months cruising Borneo and enjoying the delights of Brunei, Miri, Labuan & Kota Kinabalu we returned to Langkawi, Malaysia where we have now made Rebak Island Marina our home.
While still basing ourselves at Rebak, Mary and I will now be spending more time away cruising so would like to introduce new staff that will be taking over the day to day running of our Rebak Island Office, Alain and Frederique Fontaine. Well known in the cruising community and long term live aboard cruisers Alain and Frederique have sailed their very distinctive Yacht “OUMA 3” throughout most of SE Asia. Both are fluent in French and English and very competent with all aspects of yacht maintenance and the boating industry. Both will be kept busy as Brokers however Alain is keen to promote the LBSS Boat Care and Maintenance Packages while Frederique takes care of office administration.
